Sjabloon:Toekomst Sjabloon:Spelcomputers naar generatie De PlayStation 3 (PS3) is Sony's zevende generatie spelcomputer in de PlayStation serie. Het is de opvolger van de PlayStation 2 en zal het vooral opnemen tegen Microsoft's Xbox 360 en Nintendo's Wii. Volgens planning zal de PS3 in Japan op 11 november 2006 uitgegeven worden (100000 stuks) en op 17 november 2006 in de VS (400000 stuks). Sony komt er nu mee op de proppen dat de PS3 in Europa, het Midden-Oosten en Australië pas vanaf maart 2007 in de rekken ligt. De vertraging is het gevolg van een probleem bij de massaproductie van een component van de Blu-ray speler, aldus Sony.

Er zullen twee verschillende configuraties zijn, die verschillen qua prijs en qua mogelijkheden.

De PS3 werd door Sony officieel onthuld op 16 mei 2005 tijdens de E3 conferentie, waar het publiek de console voor het eerst kon zien.

Op 9 mei 2006 maakte Sony op de E3 de prijzen voor de Playstation 3 bekend. De versie met 20 GB harddisk gaat € 499 kosten en de versie met 60 GB € 599. De 60 GB versie zal overgens ook nog beschikken over een SD Slot loader en Wifi mogelijkheid.

Blu-ray Disc

De playstation 3 zal met Blu-ray Disc werken waar ongeveer 6 keer zoveel informatie op past als op een DVD. Er zullen twee soorten optische HD spelers op de markt komen, namelijk Blu-ray Disc (Sony, Philips, ...) en HD-DVD (Toshiba, Microsoft, ...). Maar op de lange duur kan er waarschijnlijk slechts één als echte opvolger van DVD uit de strijd komen. Voor Sony zal er waarschijnlijk veel afhangen van het feit of dit de Blu-ray gaat worden, of dat dit de HD-DVD gaat worden. Dit zal echter pas blijken als de PlayStation 3 al lang uit is. Ook zal de Playstation 3 overweg kunnen met DVD.
